Shadows of Soesterberg: Tracing the Cold War Legacy in The Netherlands
www.nmm.nl/en/visit/
In this documentary I delve into the secretive world of the Cold War era through the lens of the former Soesterberg Air Base in the Netherlands.
Nestled amidst the serene Dutch landscape, one hours drive from the bustling city of Amsterdam; Soesterberg Air Base was once a pivotal stronghold in the NATO defense network during one of history's most tense geopolitical periods.
Starting out as a civil aerodrome constructed on flat, open grass heathland east of the city of Utrecht in 1910, and becoming a full military airfield in 1918 after the end of World War One.
Dutch neutrality protected the airfield during the enormous conflict and loss of life in Flanders. But 20 year...

'Course we all knew about Missouri, and who hasn't dropped in on Wisconsin when they wanted a vodka straight from the source, but North Dakota?? Who knew! Shure is a good thing we had ol' Joe to winkle these people out. No doubt his expertise in vodka was a help.

I picked up my parents from Frankfurt Main Airport and went to McDonald's and had a Heineken with our Big Macs😂. Then we boarded the train to Berlin for the overnight trip back to Tempelhof. My mother was smoking then and when the DDR and Soviet Soldiers boarded the train, we stood in our cabin waiting for them to check their passports and my Flag orders. I had taken the train a couple of times before and the Soldiers were always very serious but that night, i guess it was a loving mother affected the young kids, smiled as they checked paperwork. Then my mother asked me if they could accept a cigarette. I spoke basic German and asked the guard if they would like an American cigarette. Their faces lit up shaking their heads yes. My mom handed the both kids a smoke and they thanked her. Before they walked away, my mom said to wait a second and she grabbed 2 packs of Winstons and handed each one a full pack. Then they looked down the train to see if anyone was looking and each one took off a epilet from their uniforms. My mom passed away several years ago but she kept the DDR and Hamer and Sickle pins proudly until she passed away. She always said that they were just kids and its our stupid government causing the hate. She was a great mother ❤

Am I understanding incorrectly that a PAL wouldn't make a stolen weapon completely useless? The fissile materials aren't rendered inert by a PAL, right? A nefarious actor might conceivably extract the spicy materials for use in another device, yeah?

Speaking of accidents that came to light after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Interflug Flight 450, scheduled to run between Berlin Schönefeld and Burgas, Bulgaria in 1972. Shortly after takepff, the Ilyushin Il-62 that formed the flight experienced an electrical fire at the rear of the passenger cabin. Declaring an emergency, the crew turned round to head back to East Berlin, however, they never made it. The plane crashed not far from the town of Königs Wusterhausen, killing all 156 people onboard. It remains the deadliest aircrash on German Soil/airspace

I was a MT stationed aboard the USS Hunley in Holy Loch from 6-'64 thru 8-'66. In '65 I went on a shakedown cruise aboard one of our missile subs just for the experience. We left Holy Loch at dark and about three hours later nearly collided with a Russian trawler which was obviously their goal as they were sitting in the channel with no lights. We only avoided the collision by about 20-30 feet. In the 60's it was common for the Russian navy to attempt a collision with US Navy ships. I suppose they were willing to sacrifice a trawler in an attempt to take a missile sub out of service - at least for a while.

You gotta remember A LOT of gov information isnt available to us normies and itll never be available to normies. I doubt the russian federation released all info on nukes as soon as the ussr fell. A backpack nuke? Probably not, but do i think we know all of their weapon systems? No chance.

My question was to be if this was before or after Blunt, which caught the Brits with their pants down - for reals. Le Carre's books are more complete than the 2 movies - Hollywood stamps it's product with its own image. The BBC series had some good character studies.

Travelled from Rotterdam to London last week on the Eurostar on a Standard Premier ticket. You're right to point out it's better to get food and drinks before checking in, because facilities after the gate are pathetic. Especially in Rotterdam, where there's only a boring waiting room with some food/drink vending machines. You point out the toilets in Business Premier are huge, but that's only because you visited the accessible toilet (for disabled/wheel chair people). Pretty sure it also has the regular, smaller toilets. During my trip the toilet stank and there wasn't any toilet paper!
